I see a lot of fellow mums and dads talking about activities they can do to help their toddlers with writing. Although you can’t expect much from a 2-3-year-old when it comes to writing, I thought I will put together a shortlist of things you can try to help the little ones on their journey.

First off, let’s look at some milestones:
1-2 year olds
- Random Scribbling
- Hold or clench a crayon
- Understand how to use a crayon and that it’s used to draw scribbles
Activities:
Encourage your child to draw and get comfortable with crayons. If you have a box big enough, you can give them crayons and sit them inside that box so they can draw on the walls of the box at their own leisure.
Have a look at this for pictures and ideas!
3-4 year olds
- Draw lines
- Mark making – such as scribbles that may resemble letters or actual letters
- Some tots may be able to write their own name
- Draw simple pictures and label them
- Draw shapes or copy them
- Hold a pencil in their dominant hand
- Draw a person with a few body parts
This website has some really helpful information if you’d like to learn more and do your own research. I used different sources to make the above list. Such as my daughter’s Red Book, the NHS Website and BabyCentre.
