This half-term, we set off to Church Farm in Ardeley for their Halloween event with the whole family in tow: John, Eloise, my brother, mum, and even our dogs! We chose this farm because it’s dog-friendly, which meant our pups could join in on the fun.

A Muddy Start with a Halloween Twist
We braced ourselves for October weather, and yes, there was mud—plenty of it! But that’s all part of the charm, right? The pumpkin patch was a bit more understated than the big, glammed-up patches you see in the U.S., but it had its own cozy, rustic vibe. Although I was expecting a bit more spectacle, it was still a lovely spot to pick out pumpkins and enjoy the autumn atmosphere.
Apple Orchards, Animal Encounters & Missed Woodland Tricks
The apple orchard turned out to be a family favourite. Eloise loved picking her own apples, and it was so peaceful to walk through the trees. The farm animals were another big hit, although I was careful about handling (got to avoid the bacteria). Eloise, however, was in heaven meeting the friendly creatures.
We even had tickets for the “Trick or Treat” event in the woodland, which I was excited about. But by the time we’d wandered the orchard, met all the animals, and made our rounds, we were all cold and tired. So, we skipped it, figuring it’d be something to come back for next year when we’re better prepared!
Amazing, Diverse Staff
I have to give credit to the staff at Church Farm—they were lovely! It was so heartwarming to see people from diverse backgrounds working together to create a special experience. Everyone was friendly, welcoming, and seemed genuinely happy to be there.
Shopping at the Farm Shop
Before leaving, we stopped by the farm shop, and what a treat! Packed with local goodies, it felt like a little treasure trove. I even picked up a leaflet on their farm-to-fork options and can’t wait to try one of their meat boxes soon!
A Cosy Finish at the Pub
To end the day, we popped over to the pub across the road for drinks. It was dog-friendly, which made it a perfect spot for our crew. The bar staff was amazing—super welcoming and friendly, making us feel right at home. After a chilly, fun-filled day, it was the perfect way to unwind.

Final Thoughts
Despite the mud and missing out on the woodland “Trick or Treat,” our day at Church Farm Ardeley was lovely and just the autumn experience we were hoping for. If you’re looking for a dog-friendly day out with kids, apple-picking, animals, and a cosy pub nearby, I’d highly recommend it. Just don’t forget your wellies!
