As the summer days start to fade and the scent of new stationery fills the air, it’s clear that the back-to-school season is upon us. Whether your little ones are heading back to the classroom this week, or you have a few more days of summer bliss, this time of year can be both exciting and challenging for families across the UK. Perhaps the same for my US followers?

The Impact on Our Children
For our children, going back to school is a major shift. New teachers, new classmates, and a return to the structured days of learning can stir up a mix of emotions. Some children may feel excited and eager, while others might be anxious or overwhelmed by the change. It’s important to remember that these feelings are completely normal, and as parents, we can play a crucial role in helping them adjust.
At home, we’ve noticed that our daughter Eloise sometimes struggles with the transition. She may seem a bit quieter or more clingy than usual, and that’s our cue to be extra sensitive and supportive. We’ve learned to find kind ways to pass on information to her, gently guiding her as she finds her feet in the new routine.

The Impact on Parents
Of course, the back-to-school transition isn’t just hard on the kids—it can be tough on us parents too. There’s the juggling of new schedules, the endless forms to fill out, and the sudden realization that summer’s carefree days are over. It’s a lot to handle, and it’s easy to get overwhelmed.
In our home, my husband and I often have to remind ourselves to be patient and kind—not just with Eloise, but with each other as well. We’re all in this together, and a little extra understanding goes a long way.

Tips to Make the Transition Smoother
To help ease this period of change, here are a few tips that have worked for us:
- Draw Up a Routine: Creating a daily routine can help your child feel more secure and less anxious about what to expect each day. It doesn’t have to be rigid, but having a general plan for the mornings and evenings can make a big difference.
- Meal Planning: Planning meals for the week can reduce stress and ensure that everyone is eating well. I’ve created a Weekly Meal Planner Template that’s free to download in Excel and PDF formats. It’s a lifesaver for busy parents! Stick it on the fridge so everyone can see what’s for dinner and add their favourite meals or grocery needs.
- Organise Clothes for the Week: Getting clothes ready for the entire week ahead can save time and reduce the morning scramble. Let your child help with this—it can give them a sense of control and involvement.
- Open Communication: Encourage your child to talk about how they’re feeling about going back to school. Listen without judgment and offer reassurance. This can help them feel supported and understood.
- Be Kind to Each Other: This is perhaps the most important tip of all. Remember that everyone in the family is adjusting to the new routine, so be gentle with yourselves and each other. A little kindness can go a long way in making this transition smoother for everyone.
As we step into this new school year, let’s remember to speak to each other, communicate openly, and above all, be kind. The back-to-school season may be challenging, but with a little care and preparation, we can help our children—and ourselves—navigate it with confidence and ease.
Here’s to a successful, smooth, and kind start to the school year!
